Garmin smartwatch users can now experience enhanced connectivity as WhatsApp messaging and calling capabilities are now available directly on select devices. This significant integration, announced by Garmin, allows users to send texts and make calls through the popular Meta-owned app, marking WhatsApp as the sole third-party messaging service accessible on Garmin's wearables.
Garmin, a brand renowned for its accurate fitness tracking, particularly for runners and sleep monitoring, has partnered with WhatsApp to bring a new level of convenience to its users. This collaboration means that owners of specific Garmin Fenix, Forerunner, Venus, and Vívoactive smartwatches can now leverage WhatsApp's global messaging platform without needing to reach for their phones.
Susan Lyman, Garmin's vice president of consumer sales and marketing, highlighted the benefit of this integration, stating, "By bringing a global messaging brand like WhatsApp to select Garmin smartwatches, we're giving customers another meaningful way to stay connected -- whether they're training, exploring or simply on the move."
The integration allows Garmin smartwatch wearers to perform several key actions directly from their wrist. Users can read and reply to incoming WhatsApp messages using the built-in keyboard on their watch screen. Additionally, they can view incoming calls and choose to accept or decline them. The feature also provides access to chat history, displaying up to the last 10 messages.
Garmin emphasizes the security of this new feature, confirming that the Kansas-based company utilizes end-to-end encryption to safeguard messages shared through the device, ensuring user privacy and data protection.
