Apple is reportedly planning a significant upgrade for its iMac desktop computer, aiming to incorporate an OLED screen. This move would offer a noticeably brighter display, a 20% increase over current models, promising enhanced image quality. However, this advanced technology is not expected to arrive anytime soon, with a potential launch window between 2027 and 2028.
Sources indicate that Apple has shared specifications for a 24-inch OLED panel with display manufacturers Samsung Display and LG Display. The target brightness for this new screen is 600 nits, a substantial jump from the 500 nits found in current iMacs. OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology is known for offering superior image quality compared to traditional LCDs, providing deeper blacks and more vibrant colors.
While the screen size and resolution are expected to remain the same as the current 24-inch iMacs, the underlying display technology will represent a significant leap forward. This aligns with Apple's broader strategy of integrating OLED displays across its product ecosystem, which already includes the Apple Watch, iPhone, and iPad. Rumors also suggest that MacBook Pro models could see an OLED upgrade as early as 2026.
Despite the exciting prospect of a brighter and more visually impressive iMac, consumers will need considerable patience. The development of these OLED panels is reportedly not slated for completion until 2027, with the actual product launch expected sometime thereafter. This extended timeline suggests that Apple is taking a deliberate approach to integrating this advanced display technology into its desktop offering.

YouTuber Austin Evans, known for his gadget reviews, shared his excitement, noting that while the current iMac M3 has its place, an OLED screen would be a "huge improvement to image quality." He also pushed back against the notion that the iMac lacks the power for professional use, suggesting that with an OLED display, it could become an "incredibly well-rounded package."
