Samsung has revealed HDR10+ Advanced, an updated dynamic HDR format that will compete with the recently announced Dolby Vision 2. The announcement renews the rivalry between the two camps as each tries to deliver the brightest and most realistic image on consumer TVs.
HDR10+ Advanced duplicates many headline features of Dolby Vision 2. Samsung says the specification lets ultra bright screens between 4,000 and 5,000 nits reach their peak luminance. Genre-specific image presets adjust the picture for different program types. Streaming games receive their own low latency mode. An ambient light sensor measures room brightness plus tweaks gamma accordingly. Per-zone tone mapping and finer color control raise overall fidelity.
Technical advances only matter if content arrives in the new format. Amazon Prime Video already committed to encode future shows in HDR10+ Advanced. Streaming rivals remained lukewarm toward the first HDR10+ version - the speed with which Netflix, Disney but also others follow Amazon will decide how quickly consumers notice the upgrade.
Samsung now offers a feature set that mirrors Dolby Vision 2. Success will depend less on laboratory metrics and more on which format wins faster backing from studios, broadcasters and set makers.
