California-based robotics company Figure has unveiled impressive new footage of its humanoid robot, Figure 02, demonstrating remarkable dexterity and autonomy. The robot, powered by the latest iteration of the company's AI software, Helix 02, successfully unloaded a dishwasher, put away clean dishes, and loaded dirty dishes back into the appliance without any human intervention. This advanced demonstration highlights significant progress in humanoid robot capabilities for practical, everyday tasks.
The new video showcases Figure 02 performing a four-minute, end-to-end autonomous task involving walking, manipulation, and balance. The AI system, Helix 02, directly processes visual input from pixels to control the robot's full body, enabling it to navigate and interact with its environment over an extended period. The demonstration includes subtle human-like movements, such as using its foot to open the dishwasher door and its hip to close a drawer, which are derived from motion-captured training data.
Figure claims this is the longest and most complex task completed autonomously by a humanoid robot to date. The system was trained on over 1,000 hours of human motion data and sophisticated sim-to-real reinforcement learning techniques. This dishwasher task follows previous demonstrations where Figure 02 exhibited proficiency in sorting packages, loading a washing machine, and folding laundry, indicating a versatile skill set.
While the demonstration is undeniably impressive, it's important to note that such tech demos are often conducted in controlled environments. The true test of a robot's capability will be its performance in less predictable, real-world settings. Nevertheless, Figure's advancements with Helix 02 represent a significant step towards integrating humanoid robots into domestic and logistical tasks, moving beyond more performative feats like backflips or martial arts demonstrations.
