Volvo is set to unveil its highly anticipated EX60 electric SUV, promising to challenge rivals like the Mercedes GLC EQ and BMW iX3 with exceptional range and rapid charging capabilities. Teaser images reveal figures that could significantly impact the competitive EV landscape, alongside a potential hidden feature that could offer more versatility than its direct competitors.
The upcoming EX60 is poised to make a significant statement in the electric vehicle market. Volvo has announced an impressive WLTP range of 503 miles (810 km), surpassing key competitors. For comparison, the BMW iX3 offers up to 500 miles (805 km), the Mercedes GLC 400 with EQ Technology is rated for 443 miles (713 km), and Tesla's Model Y struggles to exceed 400 miles (644 km) in its most touring-oriented configuration.
Beyond its extensive range, the EX60 addresses charging time concerns with its advanced 800-volt electrical architecture. Drivers can expect to add approximately 211 miles (340 km) of range in a mere 10 minutes, minimizing downtime on longer journeys. Volvo is also backing its new EV with a 10-year warranty on the battery.
Previous teasers have showcased the EX60's rear and profile, and the latest images reveal a striking front fascia featuring Volvo's signature Thor hammer LED daytime running lights. The vehicle is built on the new SPA3 platform, an evolution of the architecture used in models like the EX90. A notable innovation is Volvo's new adaptive seatbelt, which utilizes sensors to adjust belt force based on a passenger's height, weight, and shape for enhanced safety in a collision.
In a move that could differentiate it significantly from its direct rivals, the EX60 appears to offer an optional third row of seats. Unlike the strictly two-row configurations of the BMW iX3 and Mercedes GLC, teaser images of the EX60's cargo area suggest two seats are cleverly folded beneath the trunk floor. The underlying body structure also shows mounting points for a 50:50 split third row, hinting that even with the seats deployed, there might still be usable space for luggage. The full details will be revealed on January 21.
