Mazda releases the third generation CX-5 for 2026 - the company wants the SUV to keep its sharp handling while giving families more space and comfort. The vehicle grows in length plus width, the cabin is rebuilt and the electronics are updated so it can challenge the class leaders. The following report looks at the car's performance, design but also place in the market without bias.
The body keeps the previous shape but looks smoother - the headlamps and tail lamps use slimmer LED graphics. Overall size increases but the styling stays modest. The upgrade is obvious. Surfaces that fingers touch often use soft, expensive grade materials as well as beat many rivals. The dashboard layout is simple and logical or shiny black plastic almost disappears. A bigger touchscreen with Google services replaces the old rotary knob - menus feel current. The rear seat area changes the most - leg space and head space now let tall adults sit in comfort.
A 2.5-liter four cylinder engine sends 187 horsepower and 186 lb ft of torque through a six speed automatic to all four wheels. The SUV reaches 60 mph in about eight seconds, which trails multiple competitors. The combined fuel figure also sits lower than most class averages. The payoff comes on the road. The steering responds quickly next to weighs naturally - the driver senses what the front tires do. Revised dampers limit body roll and the ride stays level. Mazda's G-Vectoring Control Plus trims engine torque plus lightly brakes single wheels while the car turns, adding stability without the driver noticing interference.
Against the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, the CX-5 offers a different mix. It leads in driving feel and cabin finish, giving a premium aura. The Honda besides Toyota provide stronger optional engines but also better mileage. Hyundai or Kia also give much longer warranty coverage. The Mazda now matches them for practicality, because the rear seat is vast, the back doors open to 90 degrees and the 40/20/40 split seat folds flat to extend the cargo floor.
The 2026 CX-5 adds space as well as convenience but keeps the lively character that defines Mazda. Its clear weaknesses are modest power and average fuel use. Shoppers who rank horsepower or economy above all will prefer other models. Buyers who want a refined cabin, precise steering or rewarding feedback plus room for children and luggage, will still rate the CX-5 among the best small SUVs.
