Volkswagen's plan to revive the Scout off-road brand may be experiencing a delay. A report from Germany suggests that the launch of the new electric truck and SUV could be pushed back by a year due to unspecified "technical problems." This news raises questions about the timeline for a project backed by a multi-billion dollar investment from Volkswagen.
In response to the report, a spokesperson for Scout Motors stated that the company "has not shared any timing or product update announcements." This statement does not directly confirm or deny a delay. The company's official website currently targets the start of production for 2027 but includes a disclaimer noting that this timeline is an estimate and subject to change based on various factors.
Scout plans to offer two distinct powertrain options for its upcoming Traveler SUV and Terra pickup truck. The first is a fully electric version projected to have a driving range of approximately 350 miles on a full charge.
The second option is a range-extended model. This vehicle uses an electric motor to drive the wheels but also includes a small gasoline engine. The engine does not power the vehicle directly; instead, it functions as an onboard generator to recharge the battery. This setup is expected to increase the total range to over 500 miles, addressing common concerns about the range limitations of electric vehicles.
Despite the potential delay, public interest in the new Scout vehicles appears strong. The company has reportedly taken over 150,000 refundable reservations. Notably, around 85 percent of these early reservations are for the range-extended variant, indicating a significant consumer preference for longer-range capabilities in an off-road vehicle. While many details about the production models remain unconfirmed, the high number of reservations highlights the market's anticipation for the return of the Scout brand as development continues.
