Known primarily for its extensive work on Land Rover Defenders, the Chelsea Truck Company has introduced a new vehicle that diverges sharply from its established portfolio. The Chelsea Rivet is a compact, single-seat off-roader designed to deliver a fundamental driving experience, trading raw power for light weight and simplicity.
The Rivet's appearance combines elements of a vintage roadster with those of a small agricultural vehicle. It features an open-air design with no roof, doors, or windshield, exposing the driver to the elements. The vehicle sits high on wire wheels fitted with 17-inch tires, providing significant ground clearance. The chassis is a steel ladder-frame, a robust and straightforward design often used in durable off-road vehicles. This construction contributes to the Rivet's low total weight. The interior is spartan, containing only a single seat, a three-spoke steering wheel, two gauges, and switches for the LED lights.
Power is supplied by a 125cc gasoline engine, likely sourced from a motorcycle, which produces 7 horsepower. This modest output is paired with a vehicle weight of just 230 kg (507 lbs). This combination allows the Rivet to achieve a claimed top speed of 37 mph (60 km/h). A semi-automatic gearbox with three forward gears and one reverse handles shifting, eliminating the need for a clutch pedal. For stopping power, the vehicle is equipped with disc brakes on all four wheels.
The Chelsea Rivet is positioned as an accessible and engaging alternative to the larger, more powerful off-road vehicles that currently dominate the market. It emphasizes what the company calls “mechanical honesty” over complex systems and high horsepower. The vehicle is available to order for £4,000 before taxes. It is noted that the Rivet may be a vehicle imported by the Chelsea Truck Company for the UK market, as similar models are listed by other retailers internationally. This approach focuses on providing a thrilling driving feel without becoming intimidating, making it suitable for trail use.
