BYD has announced a significant update to its Atto 3 model, now named the Atto 3 Evo. This revised version of the company's first vehicle for the UK and European markets introduces substantial improvements under the surface, focusing on powertrain performance, battery range, and overall practicality.
The Atto 3 Evo moves to a larger 74.8kWh battery pack, a notable increase from the previous 60.5kWh unit. This new battery supports two distinct model variants. The standard 'Design' model is equipped with a single electric motor driving the rear wheels, producing 309 brake horsepower (bhp). This configuration allows for a 0-62mph acceleration time of 5.5 seconds and offers a claimed WLTP range of 317 miles.
For those seeking higher performance, the 'Excellence' model features a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system that generates a combined 443 bhp. This powerful setup reduces the 0-62mph sprint to just 3.9 seconds. The increased power output results in a slightly reduced claimed range of 292 miles on the WLTP cycle.
Beyond the mechanical upgrades, the Atto 3 Evo incorporates several practical enhancements. The vehicle's packaging has been optimized to increase boot space by 50 litres. A new and useful addition is a 101-litre storage area under the front bonnet, commonly known as a 'frunk'.
Inside the cabin, the distinctive 'guitar string' door pockets, a unique design element from the original model, have been retained. While official images suggest the previously featured rotating central infotainment screen may have been removed, the interior maintains its modern aesthetic. These changes aim to improve the vehicle's day-to-day usability.
A key technological addition is vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability. This feature allows the car's main battery to be used as a mobile power source, capable of running external electronic devices such as laptops or small appliances, which is particularly useful for outdoor activities or as a backup power supply.
The introduction of the Atto 3 Evo strengthens BYD's position in the competitive electric SUV market. The significant boosts in power and range, especially in the dual-motor 'Excellence' variant, make it a more direct competitor to established models. This update signals a clear intention from BYD to refine its offerings and appeal to a broader range of European customers. The new models are currently available for order.
