Subaru is set to expand its electric vehicle (EV) lineup with a new, larger model designed for families. The company has confirmed plans for a three-row electric SUV, scheduled for a 2026 arrival. This new vehicle will be based on a platform from partner company Toyota, marking another collaboration between the two Japanese automakers.
This upcoming SUV follows a strategy similar to the Subaru Solterra, which shares its core structure with the Toyota bZ4X. The new three-row model will be a version of Toyota’s unreleased all-electric Highlander. In the auto industry, this is often called "rebadging," where one manufacturer uses the fundamental engineering of another's vehicle and applies its own branding and minor design adjustments. This approach allows Subaru to enter the large electric SUV market more efficiently by using a proven foundation.
According to Subaru of America's chief operating officer, Jeff Walters, the vehicle is aimed at two-car households that have the ability to charge an EV at home. Its size and three rows of seating place it directly in competition with other family-oriented electric SUVs. Key rivals in this segment include the Kia EV9 and the forthcoming Hyundai Ioniq 9. By offering a larger EV, Subaru aims to provide an option for customers who need more space and passenger capacity than the compact Solterra offers.
While Subaru has not revealed the final design, it is expected to closely mirror its Toyota counterpart. The Toyota version is anticipated to resemble the bZ Large prototype showcased a few years ago. This means the primary differences between the Subaru and Toyota models will likely be limited to the badges, front grille design, lighting signatures, and wheel options. Specific technical details like battery size and driving range have not been released. However, the vehicle will use Toyota's electric platform, which includes the battery pack, electric motors, and charging system that form the core of the vehicle's powertrain.
