The upcoming 2027 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is set to redefine luxury with a significant overhaul, blending cutting-edge technology with updated powertrains. Leaked images reveal a dramatic shift towards a screen-centric interior, moving away from traditional luxury cues. This facelift introduces a more aggressive exterior design and a host of digital enhancements.
The exterior of the 2027 S-Class receives a noticeable refresh. The grille is now 20% larger and features an illuminated surround with three-dimensional chrome stars, a first for the model. The iconic hood ornament can also be illuminated. New head- and taillights incorporate starry accents, complementing updated wheel designs and an expanded color palette. For those seeking a sportier aesthetic, the optional AMG Line package adds more aggressive bumpers, side skirts, and larger AMG wheels.
The most significant changes are found within the cabin. Mercedes is replacing the traditional wood trim with a vast digital interface known as the "MBUX Superscreen." This setup integrates a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.4-inch central infotainment display, and a 12.3-inch front passenger display. This radical shift creates a more modern, albeit potentially colder, ambiance. The dashboard and center console have been redesigned to accommodate these screens, now featuring dual wireless smartphone chargers and illuminated cup holders.
Despite the digital push, Mercedes has reintroduced physical controls on the new multifunction steering wheel, including a rocker switch for the Distronic system and a roller for volume control. Innovative circular air vents offer digital control over their position, with eight customizable settings accessible via the new virtual assistant. This AI-powered assistant leverages ChatGPT4o and Microsoft Bing Search, represented by a "living" avatar in the form of the Mercedes star.
Rear-seat passengers benefit from an upgraded entertainment system with larger 13.1-inch displays. These screens come with detachable remotes and integrated cameras for Microsoft Teams meetings. Other notable interior updates include newly available heated seat belts, designed to provide a warm embrace, and a standard Burmester 3D surround sound system, with an optional 4D system boasting up to 39 speakers.
The 2027 S-Class will offer a diverse range of powertrains. A headline addition is the new flat-plane-crank V8 engine in the S 580 4Matic. This mild-hybrid, twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter unit (M177 Evo) produces 530 hp and 533 lb-ft of torque, an increase over its predecessor. Other available engines include a 3.0-liter inline-six in the S 450 (376 hp) and S 500 (443 hp) models. Diesel options will also be available in select markets.
Two plug-in hybrid variants will be offered: the S 450 e and the S 580 e. Both utilize a 3.0-liter inline-six paired with an electric motor and a 22 kWh battery. The S 450 e delivers a combined 429 hp and an electric-only range of up to 73 miles (WLTP). The more powerful S 580 e boasts 577 hp and a battery range of 64 miles (WLTP).
In the U.S., the S 500, S 580, and S 580 e will be available, with updated AMG variants expected later. Standard rear-axle steering enhances maneuverability, with an optional 10-degree system significantly reducing the turning circle. Air suspension and optional E-Active Body Control further refine the ride.
The new S-Class models are slated to arrive in U.S. showrooms in the latter half of the year, with pricing details to be announced closer to launch.
