In 2027, Apple will mark the 20th anniversary of the original iPhone. Industry watchers anticipate a launch reminiscent of the 2017 iPhone X, which redefined the smartphone with its all-screen design and Face ID. Reports suggest the anniversary model, potentially named the iPhone 20, is poised to introduce another era-defining redesign. Here are the key technological trends shaping this highly anticipated device.
The most significant rumored change is a move toward a seamless, buttonless chassis. Speculation points to an iPhone made entirely of glass, eliminating physical buttons for power, volume, and actions. Instead, the device would use haptic feedback integrated into the frame to simulate the feel of a press, similar to the technology found in a MacBook's trackpad.
This evolution would represent the ultimate expression of minimalist hardware design. By creating a single, uninterrupted surface, Apple could deliver a device that feels more futuristic. The iPhone X's removal of the home button was a major step; a completely buttonless design would be the logical, and radical, next one.
Apple is reportedly working to eliminate all display cutouts. While reports conflict on the timeline, the goal for the anniversary iPhone is a true all-screen front, with Face ID components and the selfie camera placed under the display. This would finally remove the Dynamic Island, creating a completely immersive viewing area.
To complement this, the iPhone 20 is tipped to use a new OLED panel with Color Filter on Encapsulation technology. This innovation, reportedly from Samsung, removes a layer from the display stack, resulting in a thinner profile, increased brightness, reduced glare, and lower power consumption. It’s a crucial step toward making the all-screen vision a practical reality.
Internally, the iPhone 20 is expected to feature a second-generation 2nm chip, building on the architecture anticipated for the 2026 iPhone lineup. This would bring significant gains in processing power and energy efficiency, enabling more complex AI features and demanding applications.
A major leap is also expected in battery technology. Reports indicate Apple is exploring pure silicon anode batteries for the anniversary model. This technology, already present in phones like the OnePlus 15, offers superior energy density, allowing for a larger battery capacity within the same physical footprint. This could deliver a significant improvement in battery life.
While still a few years away, the iPhone 20 is shaping up to be more than an incremental update. Combining a buttonless, all-glass body, a true edge-to-edge display, and next-generation silicon and battery technology, it has the potential to be another landmark product.
