Samsung SDI is set to revolutionize the burgeoning field of physical AI with the debut of its first pouch-type all-solid-state battery, specifically engineered for humanoid robots and other advanced compact systems. This innovative power source promises enhanced energy density, superior safety, and a more flexible form factor, addressing critical engineering challenges in robotics.
The battery will be showcased at the InterBattery 2026 exhibition in Seoul, highlighting Samsung SDI's commitment to supporting the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure sector. Beyond robotics, the company is also presenting solutions for data centers and high-power applications, underscoring its broad vision for the future of energy.
Traditional lithium-ion batteries, reliant on liquid electrolytes, present limitations in terms of safety and energy density. Solid-state batteries, by replacing these liquids with solid materials, overcome these hurdles. Samsung SDI's new pouch design is particularly suited for robotics and other compact devices where space is at a premium, yet high energy density and rapid power output are essential.
Robots require batteries that can handle sudden, high power demands during movement while maintaining safety and reliability. The pouch form factor allows for a more adaptable design, enabling integration into lightweight and flexible components, a significant departure from the company's previous focus on prismatic solid-state batteries primarily for electric vehicles.
Beyond the robotics sector, Samsung SDI is also addressing the power needs of the broader AI infrastructure. A key exhibit will be the U8A1 battery, designed for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems in data centers. This prismatic battery utilizes lithium manganese oxide chemistry to deliver high power output and enhanced safety, improving space efficiency by approximately 33% over previous solutions.
The company will also present a battery backup unit solution for data center servers, ensuring immediate power during outages to prevent data loss and maintain operational continuity. Samsung SDI aims to demonstrate how its battery technology is crucial for realizing the full potential of the AI era, offering premium solutions tailored to the evolving demands of AI-driven industries.
