Chinese technology firm Honor has signaled a significant push into artificial intelligence-powered hardware by unveiling a conceptual “robot phone” and its first humanoid robot. The announcements, made ahead of MWC Barcelona, position the company to compete aggressively in the crowded Android market by introducing novel forms of user interaction and device functionality.
Honor's AI Robot Phone concept moves beyond conventional AI integration, which typically relies on screen capture and voice commands. This device features a motorized, three-axis gimbal arm attached to its camera system. This mechanical component enables the phone to physically interact with its environment and users. Key capabilities include advanced motion tracking, allowing the camera to follow subjects smoothly, and responding to user commands with physical gestures like nods or even dancing to music. The design also facilitates all-angle video calls, providing a level of flexibility not seen in standard smartphones.
This hardware-centric approach to AI creates a clear distinction from other AI-agent handsets currently on the market. By integrating a stable, object-tracking camera system, Honor's robot phone presents a potential challenge to established action camera manufacturers such as DJI. The gimbal's stability and ability to follow subjects in fast-moving scenarios could offer a compelling alternative for content creators and technology enthusiasts, merging the functionality of a high-end smartphone with that of a dedicated action camera.
Alongside the innovative phone concept, Honor also debuted its first humanoid robot. This assistant is designed to leverage the company's extensive expertise in mobile device technology to perform a variety of roles. Envisioned applications include serving as a shopping assistant, a workplace inspector for quality control, and a personal companion. This development indicates Honor's broader strategy to build an ecosystem of intelligent devices that extend beyond the smartphone, aiming to integrate AI more deeply into daily life and work environments.
