When the PlayStation 5 Pro was introduced, its hardware upgrades—more GPU cores and faster clock speeds—offered an incremental improvement over the base PS5 model. However, a recent software development is poised to create a much wider performance gap between the two consoles, fundamentally changing the value proposition of the Pro model.
The key differentiator is PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Sony's proprietary upscaling technology. This software takes frames rendered at a lower resolution and intelligently enhances them to appear as if they were rendered at a higher native resolution. According to PlayStation's lead hardware architect, Mark Cerny, an updated version of PSSR is rolling out globally, promising significant visual and performance enhancements for PS5 Pro users.
The practical impact of this technology is already evident. Analysis of games like Resident Evil Requiem shows a stark contrast. On the PS5 Pro, the game can maintain a consistent 60 frames per second at 1080p resolution with advanced ray-tracing effects enabled. This feature, which simulates realistic light behavior, often forces significant performance compromises on the base PS5. Without ray tracing, the PS5 Pro can even achieve 120 fps, a feat the standard model struggles with under similar conditions.
This advancement stems from Sony's deep collaboration with AMD on upscaling technology, evolving from FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) to the new PSSR framework. Initially developed for newer PC GPU architectures, Sony has successfully adapted this powerful upscaler for the PS5 Pro's specific hardware. The result is not just higher frame rates but also visibly sharper image quality and more refined details, fulfilling the initial promise of next-generation console gaming.
Sony has confirmed that multiple existing and upcoming titles will receive patches to enable these PSSR enhancements. For gamers who prioritize visual fidelity and smooth performance, the PS5 Pro is no longer just a minor upgrade. With the power of PSSR, it establishes itself as a significantly more capable machine, offering a gaming experience with ray tracing and high frame rates that was previously the exclusive domain of high-end gaming PCs. This positions the PS5 Pro as the definitive version of the current PlayStation console generation.
