Embark Studios' new extraction shooter, Arc Raiders, has a distinct visual style and the developers are committed to preserving it. For players concerned about the potential for out-of-place or goofy costumes, the studio has clarified its position - protecting the game's visual identity is a top priority.
Design director Virgil Watkins has confirmed that the team will maintain the game's current aesthetic. The core principle is that any new cosmetic items must align with the world's fiction and established tone. According to Watkins, the game's artistic vision is too strong to compromise with silly additions.
He explained the studio's philosophy on the matter: "We're protective of anything that enters the game. It has to match the visual identity, the tone plus the setting." Watkins believes that the short lived amusement of a novelty skin does not outweigh the harm it causes to the game's carefully built mood.
This stance does not rule out creative skins. The development team plans to create cosmetics that suggest a theme instead of copying it. Watkins gave an example - instead of a literal Santa Claus outfit, the team might design gear that hints at Santa Claus but passes through the Arc Raiders aesthetic filter.
This keeps all content grounded and coherent within the game's universe. In comparison to other popular shooters that add celebrity faces, Arc Raiders will add cosmetics that strengthen its world instead of pulling players out of it. Players can trust that the game's strong look will stay intact.
