Prepare for a new star among SUVs. Mercedes-Benz is quietly building a smaller, battery powered version of the famous G-Class. Spy photos and designer sketches show that the “baby G-Wagon” keeps the same boxy outline and tough look as the big brother, only sized for electric travel.

Key points

A shape you know, lightly updated

Fresh spy shots of test cars wrapped in camouflage reveal how the small G-Class will appear. Drawings based on those shots show a machine that still looks like a G-Wagen. The upright square profile stays, though the edges are softened to match the rest of the current Mercedes SUV family. The round headlamps return, now with a small hood of bodywork that gives an “eyelid” shadow. A new grille adds detail - yet the overall look will be obvious at first glance.

Short body, strong character

Although the style is familiar, the baby G-Wagon sits on a clearly shorter wheelbase. The rear doors look small and sit tight within the bodywork, a sign that legroom behind the driver will be tight - the payoff is a smaller outer size. At the back the classic G-Class shape remains, only a little softer. A slim square box replaces the usual spare wheel carrier - it is meant to hold the charging cable, a clear signal that the vehicle runs on battery power alone.

Drive system and later choices

Mercedes is said to be building the baby G-Class on a special platform that keeps the ladder frame chassis - the off road skill linked to the G-Wagen name survives. Exact motor and battery numbers are still secret - yet the electric parts are expected to borrow hardware already used in other Mercedes battery models like the GLC. In the future the company might also release hybrid or even petrol versions to satisfy buyers who still want those choices as the market shifts.
