The Genesis G70, a sporty rear-wheel-drive sedan many believed was nearing the end of its production run, may be getting a new lease on life. Recent reports from South Korea suggest that the luxury marque has completed emissions and noise certifications for an updated G70 model, hinting at a continued presence in the market.
Following the discontinuation of its close relative, the Kia Stinger, many anticipated the Genesis G70 would soon follow suit as market trends shifted towards SUVs and production timelines evolved. However, new information indicates that the G70 might outlast these expectations.
According to sources in South Korea, the updated G70 has undergone its most substantial revisions since its initial facelift in late 2020. While official details on exterior design modifications are scarce, speculation suggests potential inspiration from the G80 Wingback concept, which could introduce slimmer headlights and a refined grille.
Beyond aesthetics, the report also indicates that the updated G70 might see a slight increase in weight to meet stricter crash safety regulations. Genesis is also reportedly focusing on efficiency improvements for the engine lineup.
Under the hood, the updated G70 is expected to retain its current engine options. This includes the 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivering 304 horsepower and the more potent 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 producing 370 horsepower. The eight-speed automatic transmission and the choice between rear-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations are also anticipated to carry over.
It remains to be seen whether this refreshed G70 will be offered in markets outside of South Korea, including the United States. Genesis has been contacted for further clarification on the reported updates and potential international availability.
