Journalists recently had the opportunity to experience a passenger ride in Jaguar's controversial Type 00 prototype, and the initial impressions suggest the upcoming electric vehicle may exceed expectations. Despite a rocky marketing campaign, the vehicle itself is proving to be a remarkable piece of engineering, blending comfort, refinement, and potent performance.
Autocar magazine's editor-in-chief, Steve Cropley, described the prototype as "the best-riding car ever" after testing it on various surfaces and speeds at Jaguar's proving grounds. This exceptional comfort is attributed to an extremely stiff chassis paired with an adaptive three-chamber air suspension system that precisely controls each corner independently. This advanced setup allows for remarkable isolation from road imperfections while maintaining a connected feel.
The Type 00 is slated to feature a potent tri-motor powertrain, generating over 1,000 horsepower. With 900 horsepower directed to the rear wheels via individual motors, the car is surprisingly adept at drifting, according to Top Gear. Precise torque vectoring from the dual-motor rear axle will enable drivers to easily manage the vehicle's dynamics, making it an unexpectedly engaging machine.
Even under camouflage, the production-intent Type 00 sedan makes a striking visual statement. Its long, low profile, short front overhang, and set-back greenhouse create proportions reminiscent of 1930s luxury cars, setting it apart from anything else on the road, save for ultra-luxury marques like Rolls-Royce and Bentley. Inside, the seating position is notably low for an electric vehicle, offering a more integrated feel rather than the typical "sitting on top" sensation common in EVs. This low-slung seating, combined with comfort and sportiness, promises a unique cabin experience.
The prototype demonstrated impressive high-speed stability, allowing for quiet conversation even at 150 mph, despite the camouflage noise. Acceleration was potent, leading to speculation about a two-speed transmission, potentially similar to that found in the Porsche Taycan. Top Gear editor Jack Rix echoed the sentiments regarding performance, quietness, and comfort. Jaguar is reportedly planning a distinctive acceleration sound that will avoid a "spaceship" feel, possibly mimicking a traditional engine note. With an estimated 120 kWh battery, the Type 00 is expected to offer over 400 miles of range, though its substantial weight of around 5,500 pounds (2.2 tonnes) means it will prioritize engaging driving dynamics over pure sports car agility. The production version, expected next year, will likely be renamed and carry a starting price exceeding $130,000, aiming to continue Jaguar's legacy of producing exceptional-driving electric vehicles.
