BYD will launch the UK's first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) supermini in 2026. This new B-segment hatchback, known internally as the Dolphin G, is designed for European markets and will be the smallest PHEV available in the UK. It will be around four metres long and 1.5 metres tall, targeting customers seeking an affordable, practical, and environmentally friendly urban vehicle. This model acts as a plug-in hybrid alternative to BYD's Dolphin Surf EV, offering both electric and petrol-powered driving.
While full details have not yet been disclosed, the Dolphin G is anticipated to use a powertrain similar to the BYD Atto 2 DM-i. That system combines a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor. The Atto 2 DM-i outputs 259bhp and claims 156mpg, with a larger battery option enabling an electric-only range of up to 56 miles. However, due to the supermini’s compact size, the Dolphin G may feature a smaller battery and possibly lower power output. The vehicle’s hybrid system can operate either as a series hybrid (engine generates power for the motor) or a parallel hybrid (engine and motor work together), optimizing efficiency for city driving.
Current options in this segment, such as the Toyota Yaris, Renault Clio, and MG 3, use full hybrid technology, which generally prioritizes lower costs and space efficiency but doesn't offer plug-in capability. The Dolphin G stands out by allowing users to charge the battery for extended electric-only trips, potentially reducing overall fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions further than most full hybrids in this category. This makes the Dolphin G unique for environmentally conscious buyers who want urban practicality without range anxiety.
The introduction of the Dolphin G marks BYD's commitment to the European market. Remarkably, this will be the company’s first European-focused car, not adapted from Chinese-market models. Production will take place at BYD’s new factory in Hungary, with the Dolphin G joining other models in the rapidly expanding European line-up. This move highlights a broader industry trend of expanding plug-in technology into more compact, affordable vehicle segments, offering UK drivers more electrified choices in urban-friendly packages.
A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is a car that uses both an internal combustion engine (petrol) and an electric motor. Unlike a regular hybrid, you can charge the battery with an external power source for more electric-only mileage. A series hybrid uses the petrol engine to generate electricity, powering the car with the electric motor, while a parallel hybrid can use both at the same time for better performance.
In summary, BYD’s upcoming Dolphin G brings advanced plug-in hybrid technology to a new segment, promising affordable, efficient, and flexible urban mobility for UK drivers in 2026.
