Genesis has officially discontinued the G80 Electrified sedan for the 2025 model year. The decision comes as the luxury automaker adapts to evolving consumer preferences and potential economic factors, leaving a gap in its electric sedan offerings. While the brand remains committed to electrification, the G80 Electrified's departure marks a notable shift.
An eagle-eyed observation on Genesis's website revealed the G80 Electrified's absence from the current lineup, prompting inquiries that were confirmed by Genesis North America. Senior PR manager Jarred Pellat stated, "The customer is at the core of every decision we make, and we remain flexible as we adapt to ever-changing consumer needs and market conditions." For those seeking an all-electric Genesis, the GV60 and GV70 Electrified remain available.
Despite its discontinuation, the G80 Electrified offered a compelling package. Its 365 horsepower and an estimated 282-mile range from an 87.2-kWh battery provided competitive performance for a sedan based on a gasoline platform. The driving experience was noted for its quiet operation, smooth power delivery, and refinement, enhancing the already well-regarded G80 sedan.
Its sedan form factor was also a refreshing alternative in a market dominated by SUVs. However, the demand for large electric sedans appears to be soft, with sales figures for the G80 Electrified likely being modest, especially considering the gas-powered G80 sold fewer than 4,155 units.
The future of the G80 Electrified, particularly a potential facelifted 2026 model with a longer wheelbase and upgraded interior, remains unclear for the U.S. market. Genesis has not provided further details on its potential arrival stateside.
Adding to the uncertainty are potential 15% tariffs threatened on South Korean imports, which would directly affect the pricing of the Korean-manufactured G80 Electrified. Combined with softer-than-expected EV sales, the discontinuation is a disappointment for a brand that has previously expressed ambitions to become fully electric within the decade.
For consumers still interested in the G80 Electrified, any remaining new models on dealership lots represent the final opportunity to purchase this particular electric sedan.
