The Genesis G90 is the flagship luxury sedan from Genesis, aimed at the premium market with high end technology and luxury features. Genesis recently recalled certain G90 models built from 2023 - 2026. The recall covers only those cars painted "Savile Silver," a color that contains a high level of aluminum flakes. The flakes disturb the radar based driver-assistance systems.
The problem appears on cars that have Highway Drive Assist (HDA). HDA relies on radar sensors for lane-keeping plus collision avoidance. The silver paint holds a large amount of aluminum - the metal reflects radar signals too strongly at the front bumper corners. The extra reflections fool the car into believing an obstacle exists. The system then brakes hard without warning, most often below 12 mph or when Lane Change Assist is active. Engineers tested every other factory color and found interference only with Savile Silver.
The Genesis G90 earns praise for fitting advanced assistance systems that raise safety and comfort placing the model among top luxury rivals. Yet the metallic content in this particular paint revealed an unexpected flaw - a modern safety system that conflicts with a styling choice. Drivers reported sudden phantom braking raising safety worries. Genesis told affected owners to stop using HDA but also designed a sealed bumper beam that keeps radar sensors away from paint related reflections.
Luxury vehicles now carry Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that normally work with any factory paint or trim. The recall shows how easily current radar hardware reacts to exterior changes. Comparable sedans from BMW besides Mercedes-Benz undergo broad compatibility tests to prevent such surprises. Genesis has paused use of Savile Silver and will install a hardware shield - the move follows tightening industry rules for safety as well as quality.
ADAS radar sensors send out signals that rebound off objects to judge distance. Paint that holds a heavy load of metal reflects those signals too well - the car "sees" objects that do not exist. The safety system then brakes when no hazard is present.
Genesis advises affected owners to leave HDA switched off until dealers finish the repair. No injuries or crashes have been tied to the issue and dealerships already have the required parts.
