What change is BYD making to its car touchscreens?
BYD will no longer fit screens that turn on a central pivot. Until now every car from the cheapest Dolphin Surf upwards carried a display that flipped between portrait and landscape.
Why did BYD introduce rotating touchscreens in the first place?
The turning screen set the cabin apart from rival cars. Drivers could stand the display upright for navigation or lay it flat for movies while the vehicle stood still. BYD promoted the idea as a versatile, user friendly touchpoint.
What is the reason for removing this feature?
Stella Li, BYD vice president, states that deeper ties with Google services besides Apple CarPlay demand a single, steady aspect ratio. Tests show that although buyers liked the gimmick, they rarely rotated the panel. A fixed landscape format now gives cleaner support for third party software.
Which new model leads this change?
The BYD Atto 2 crossover ships with a 12.4-inch screen locked in landscape. Future models will follow the same pattern until the swivel mechanism disappears from the entire range.
What is BYD's next area of focus?
The firm will concentrate on autonomous driving and broaden its technology alliances, above all with Apple or Google. Those partners require a uniform interface that accepts a broad set of applications.
How will this benefit the user?
A fixed landscape panel delivers steadier, faster responses from widely used apps. BYD can then push updates that keep drivers in step with the newest features without waiting for hardware to turn.
