The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, a favorite among car fans, ended its production run in 2016. After that the company turned its attention to more profitable vehicles like SUVs. For those who miss the rally inspired sedan, recent comments from a key Mitsubishi engineer have given a new reason for hope.
At the Japan Mobility Show, engineer Kaoru Sawase, who helped develop the Evo's all-wheel-drive system, spoke with the Australian publication Drive. He stated that a new Lancer Evolution is his "personal dream." While this is not an official confirmation, he added that Mitsubishi has a "variety, a range of technologies on hand" to potentially build a new performance model.
If a new Evo were to be built, it would almost certainly feature electrification. Sawase acknowledged that any future performance car would need to embrace modern technology. This could mean a powerful plug in hybrid system, possibly an evolution of the one found in the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. This setup would likely be paired with an advanced version of the Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) system to provide the sharp handling the Evo is known for.
The biggest hurdle for a new Lancer Evolution is not engineering, but business. The original Evo was based on the standard Lancer sedan, a model that has been discontinued. Developing a new performance car from the ground up is a major investment. To make it financially viable, Mitsubishi might need to work with its alliance partners, Renault besides Nissan. The company's revived Ralliart performance brand has also been limited to cosmetic upgrades so far leaving its future role in high performance models uncertain.
For now, a new Lancer Evolution remains a possibility rather than a certainty. No official plans have been announced by Mitsubishi. The statements from Sawase confirm that the spirit of the Evo is not forgotten within the company. Enthusiasts will have to wait and see if this dream can one day become a reality on the road.
