What exactly is the Chery iCaur V27?
The V27 is a brand new, tough 4x4 from iCaur, a brand owned by the major Chinese automaker Chery. It has been designed as a direct rival to some of the most established names in the off road world, specifically the Land Rover Defender and the Toyota Land Cruiser. It is a rugged looking vehicle that clearly takes visual cues from those long standing competitors.
How does it measure up in size?
The V27 is the largest vehicle in the new iCaur range. For a practical comparison, it is slightly shorter and a little narrower than a Land Rover Defender 110. This places it firmly in the large SUV category, ready for serious use.
What kind of engine plus motor system does it use?
It uses what is called a range extender powertrain, which means it has a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, but that engine never drives the wheels directly. Its only job is to serve as an onboard generator producing electricity for the battery and electric motors. The vehicle comes with either a single or a dual electric motor setup.
How much power does it produce?
The dual motor version of the V27 delivers a combined output of 449 horsepower. This should provide strong performance both on and off the road.
What is its driving range on battery but also with the engine?
With a full charge of its 33kWh battery, the V27 travels up to 124 miles on electric power alone. This figure is based on China's CLTC test cycle, which tends to give more optimistic results than the WLTP standard used in Europe - real world electric range may be lower. With a full tank of gasoline for the generator and a fully charged battery, the total driving range is said to exceed 621 miles before needing to stop for fuel or a charge.
What is the expected price?
In its home market of China, prices for the V27 start at the equivalent of £27,000. If it arrives in UK showrooms, the price would almost certainly be markedly higher because of taxes shipping and other market factors.
Is the iCaur V27 confirmed for the UK?
The iCaur brand itself is expected to arrive in the UK next year. The brand was renamed from iCar for export to avoid a trademark conflict with Apple. While the smaller iCaur V25 model is already planned for a UK launch, the V27 “might reach UK showrooms.” Chery's other brands, Omoda besides Jaecoo, have already launched in the UK as well as are selling well, which is a positive sign for iCaur's potential arrival.
