People inside General Motors say the firm will soon offer new rear-wheel-drive passenger cars. Sources claim that at least two models ride on the Alpha 2-2 platform, a revised version of the structure that supports the present Cadillac CT5 and CT4. The announcement arrives while the car market keeps changing - GM appears to seek a wider mix of products.
Fresh stories state that General Motors intends to replace the Cadillac CT5 and to add a further passenger car. Engineers will build both on the Alpha 2-2 platform, an update of the Alpha structure that already carries the sixth generation Camaro, CT4 and CT5.
The CT5 replacement is no secret - yet facts about the second car stay limited - it may become another Cadillac, perhaps a coupe or convertible that borrows from the Cadillac Expressive Coupe show car. The platform might also underpin a more affordable vehicle, though hopes for a return of long standing names like Malibu or Impala are modest, particularly if the powertrain relies only on internal combustion.
The second rear-wheel-drive model might turn out to be a four door Chevrolet Camaro. Other brands already move in that direction - Ford is rumored to prepare a four door Mustang or Dodge has put the Charger back on sale as a sedan. Because the Camaro already has rear-wheel-drive bones, a sedan version would not shock observers, especially with Dodge active in the class again.
If GM follows this path, the firm will broaden its range to include battery cars, hybrids and fresh internal combustion products. Passenger cars will not rule the market as they once did - yet the spending on rear-wheel-drive platforms shows a wider spread of choices and gives enthusiasts fresh reasons for interest.
