Q - What has Toyota recently confirmed about their future sports cars?
Toyota confirms it is building a fresh twin turbo V8 - that V8 will sit at the core of the upcoming Toyota GR GT3 supercar and will also power the Lexus Sport Concept.
Q - Why is Toyota developing a new V8 instead of focusing only on electrification?
Toyota remains committed to hybrids - yet executives still see value in pure gasoline power. Takashi Uehara, who leads powertrain development, says the company keeps the V8 because it delivers strong output plus a specific exhaust sound. The new unit is tuned for peak output at high revs.
Q - Will the new V8 engine be used in both Toyota besides Lexus models?
Each brand will receive its own calibration of the twin turbo V8. The GR GT3 will run a track oriented setup - the Lexus Sport Concept will use a different calibration matched to that car.
Q - How powerful is this new V8 expected to be?
Toyota has not released final numbers, but sources expect the 4.0-liter twin turbo V8 to exceed 800 horsepower in certain specs. A related 2.0-liter four cylinder turbo is already projected to reach 400 horsepower without electric aid - the V8 target appears realistic.
Q - Is the new V8 engine related to any current Toyota engines?
The V8 shares core structure with Toyota's forthcoming 2.0-liter turbo four. Both engines use the same design approach and multiple identical internal parts.
Q - Will there be hybrid technology involved?
The GR GT3 team favors manual gearboxes but also minimal electrification - yet the race car will use an automatic gearbox. A mild self charging hybrid system could appear, chiefly on the Lexus variant.
Q - When can we expect more details on those new models and engines?
Toyota will reveal the GR GT3 as well as release further V8 data on December 5.
