Hyundai has confirmed that the Elexio electric SUV will go on sale in Australia next year. The car was designed and built with BAIC, Hyundai's joint venture partner in China and most observers expected it to stay in that market alone. By shipping the Elexio to Australia, Hyundai adds a vehicle built in China to its local catalogue for the first time. The Elexio will sit in the middle of Hyundai's electric range, larger than the Kona Electric yet smaller than the Ioniq 5. Its dimensions plus expected sticker price line up against the Tesla Model Y and the BYD Sealion 7, both high volume sellers. Buyers will decide whether the styling and the Chinese production background help or hurt sales. Hyundai uses the same E-GMP underpinnings found in the Ioniq 5. A 88.1 kWh battery sits in the floor - the company quotes a WLTP range above 500 km. A DC charger adds 30 - 80 percent charge in about 27 minutes. Three trim levels will reach Australia - a single motor standard-range, a single motor long-range but also a dual motor all-wheel-drive flagship. The two-wheel-drive cars produce 160 kW / 215 hp - the all-wheel-drive version delivers 230 kW / 308 hp. The dashboard carries a 27-inch panel that stretches from the centre to the passenger side - it combines the main infotainment display with a separate zone for the front seat passenger. A smaller instrument binnacle sits in front of the driver. Hyundai has not announced local pricing, but analysts expect a window from AU$55 000 to AU$65 000. That bracket puts the Elexio squarely among mid size electric SUVs - the exact figure will shape buyer reaction.
