General Motors and its Chinese partner Wuling build a small electric SUV called the Baojun Yep Plus. The cute little car will now reach Brazil for the first time outside China, sold there as a Chevrolet. People see a clear likeness to Toyota's new, smaller Land Cruiser FJ, even though the Chevy is not meant for hard trails.
Toyota's new Land Cruiser FJ won praise for its old school look, but U.S. buyers will not get it. GM's Baojun Yep Plus, born from the GM-Wuling joint venture, offers a similarly boxy, cheerful face. The Yep Plus runs on battery power but also is not built for rocky paths - yet its square shape turns heads.
Viewed from the side, the two SUVs share a near identical outline. The Yep Plus is simply smaller: 157.3 in (3,996 mm) long, 69.3 in (1,760 mm) wide, 68 in (1,726 mm) tall and it rides on a 100.8 in (2,560 mm) wheelbase. The Toyota stretches to 180.1 in (4,575 mm) in length, 73 in (1,855 mm) in width, 77.2 in (1,960 mm) in height, with a 101.6 in (2,580 mm) wheelbase.
The Yep Plus carries smoother, rounder bumpers, while the FJ wears tough, angular cladding and jagged wheel arch extensions. Headlight as well as taillight positions on both SUVs line up almost exactly. The FJ's rear lamps sit higher and jut out a bit - the Baojun's lamps fit flush with the tailgate panel.
GM will ship the Yep Plus to Brazil and sell it as the Chevrolet Spark EUV. The Brazilian version keeps a 42 kWh battery or a 101 hp rear motor, good for around 249 miles (401 km) of range on China's CLTC test.
No one knows if Americans would buy the little EV at a low price. The story notes that a gasoline engine option and wider fenders and extra plastic armor, would give the SUV a tougher look also might attract more buyers moving it even closer to the Land Cruiser FJ's adventurous image.
