Ford has unveiled the new Transit City for the European market, an all-electric commercial van developed in partnership with China's Jiangling Motor Corporation (JMC). This vehicle marks a strategic move for Ford, leveraging a dedicated EV platform from its joint venture to address the needs of urban commercial operators.
The Transit City is powered by a 56 kilowatt-hour lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery, a technology known for its durability and cost-effectiveness. It delivers a WLTP-rated range of up to 256 kilometers (160 miles). While this figure may seem modest, it is designed for its intended use. Ford states that 90% of its customers in this segment travel less than 110 kilometers per day, making the van's range sufficient for typical urban delivery routes. The single electric motor produces 110 kilowatts (148 horsepower). For charging, it supports 67 kW DC fast charging, which can replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes. Standard AC charging at 11 kW takes approximately five hours for a full charge.
The vehicle will be available in three body styles: a low-roof van, a high-roof van, and a chassis cab for custom applications. The larger van variant offers a substantial 8.5 cubic meters of cargo space and a payload capacity of 1,275 kilograms (2,810 lbs). The maximum load length exceeds three meters, accommodating a variety of commercial goods. Inside, the driver is equipped with a digital instrument cluster and a large infotainment touchscreen supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Standard features include adaptive cruise control, parking sensors, and a rearview camera, all aimed at improving safety and convenience in congested city environments.
The introduction of the Transit City comes as Ford shifts its EV strategy in Europe. The van is built on the same platform as the JMC Touring and will be manufactured in China. This collaboration highlights a growing trend of Western automakers partnering with Chinese firms to develop electric vehicles. A key selling point for fleet managers is the total cost of ownership. Ford claims the Transit City offers a 40% reduction in ownership costs compared to a similar diesel model. This is supported by longer service intervals of two years or 40,000 kilometers and an eight-year, 160,000-kilometer warranty on the battery. With a starting price of around £27,000, the Transit City presents a financially viable option for businesses looking to electrify their fleets.
