Subaru is set to pull the wraps off its latest all-electric SUV next week at the New York International Auto Show. The automaker released a shadowy teaser image hinting at the vehicle's design and confirmed it will boast an impressive 420 horsepower. This upcoming EV marks a significant expansion of Subaru's electric lineup, following recent updates to the Solterra and the introduction of the Uncharted and Trailseeker models.
The teaser image, showing the SUV cruising down a highway, offers a limited view but confirms the presence of roof rails, a signature Subaru feature. While the exact model remains a mystery, speculation points towards a potential three-row electric SUV, a segment Subaru's COO Jeff Walters indicated the company planned to enter by year's end. This could be the electric counterpart to the Ascent, Subaru's largest gasoline-powered SUV.
Subaru has been steadily growing its EV offerings. The Solterra recently received a substantial mid-cycle refresh for the 2026 model year, enhancing its range and charging capabilities. The launch of the compact Uncharted and the Outback-inspired Trailseeker further diversifies their electric range. The upcoming SUV, if it is indeed a three-row model, would fill a gap in their current EV strategy, especially considering Toyota recently unveiled its three-row Highlander EV without a Subaru equivalent yet.
Subaru's electric vehicle development often involves a close collaboration with Toyota, with many Subaru EVs having a Toyota twin. Examples include the bZ4X and Solterra, the bZ-like Woodland and Trailseeker, and the C-HR and Uncharted. The introduction of this new electric SUV will likely continue this trend, potentially leveraging Toyota's platform for larger electric vehicles.
All will be revealed on April 1st, when Subaru officially unveils the new EV and provides full details on its specifications and features.
