BMW is developing a redesigned iX1, the brand's smallest electric SUV. Recent prototype sightings indicate a significant shift in design and technology, drawing heavily from the larger iX3 and the company's new 'Neue Klasse' design philosophy. The updated model is poised to feature substantial improvements in performance, charging speed, and interior technology.

A New Design Direction

The most noticeable change on the forthcoming iX1 is the front-end styling. The large kidney grilles of the current model are being replaced by smaller, vertically oriented units, aligning its appearance with the new iX3 and other future BMW models. This change is part of the 'Neue Klasse' design language, which emphasizes cleaner lines and a more minimalist aesthetic.

The exterior redesign also includes a sleeker side profile with flush-mounted door handles, contributing to improved aerodynamics. While the rear of the test vehicles remains heavily concealed, new LED taillight designs are expected to complete the visual overhaul.

Powertrain and Charging Advancements

The new iX1 is expected to incorporate BMW’s sixth-generation electric drive and battery technology, which is also used in the iX3. This updated hardware is engineered for greater efficiency and performance. A key technical upgrade is the potential adoption of an 800-volt electrical architecture. This system allows for significantly faster charging rates, possibly up to 400 kW, which would drastically reduce the time needed to recharge the battery compared to the current model.

While the exact battery capacity for the smaller iX1 has not been confirmed, the new technology is expected to deliver a competitive range. Initial production will likely prioritize single-motor, rear-wheel-drive variants, with dual-motor, all-wheel-drive models following later.

Interior and Market Context

Inside, the iX1 is set to receive the new BMW Panoramic iDrive system. This setup features a wide, continuous screen that serves as both the driver's instrument cluster and the central infotainment display. The layout is expected to mirror that of the iX3, including a tilted central screen angled toward the driver for better ergonomics.

As the entry-level model in BMW's electric SUV lineup, the iX1 faces a competitive market. These comprehensive updates in design, charging capability, and interior features are intended to strengthen its position against a growing number of rivals. The new model aims to offer a compelling package of modern technology and premium features in a compact form.
