Mercedes-AMG is set to reintroduce V8 engines to parts of its lineup, a strategic pivot highlighted by the planned release of a limited-edition CLE 63. According to recent reports from a dealer meeting, this new model will be a central piece of the brand's upcoming product strategy, with a reported production run of only 30 units worldwide.
The core of the new CLE 63 will be a new flat-plane crank V8 engine, reportedly producing 646 horsepower (655 PS). A flat-plane crank is an engine design where the connecting rods are attached to the crankshaft at 180-degree intervals. This configuration allows the engine to rev higher and produces a unique, high-pitched exhaust note often associated with race cars, differing from the deeper sound of a traditional cross-plane V8.
This move is seen as a direct response to market feedback on the four-cylinder hybrid C 63 model. The new V8 is not expected to be exclusive to the CLE 63. Projections indicate it will also power future models, including a potential next-generation C 63 sedan and a new GT Black Series, signaling a broader return to larger displacement engines for the performance brand.
While recommitting to the V8, AMG is not abandoning its electrification efforts. The brand also presented plans for three all-electric models built on a dedicated AMG platform. The lineup includes a four-door GT coupe and two crossover models, one with a taller stance and another with a lower, sloping roofline.
The electric GT coupe is projected to have a range of approximately 400 miles (644 km), while the crossovers are expected to offer at least 300 miles (483 km) of range. These vehicles represent AMG's effort to compete in the high-performance electric vehicle segment.
The product plan also includes the return of the G-Class Cabriolet, which has been absent for decades and is now slated for the U.S. market. This open-top version of the G-Wagen will be equipped with the current G 63's twin-turbo V8 engine, with production expected to begin in 2027.
This entire product offensive, from the V8-powered CLE 63 to the new G-Class Cabriolet, is part of a larger strategic shift. With demand in the Chinese market leveling off, Mercedes and its AMG division are now targeting North America as the primary region for future growth.
