What is the new DS N°7?

The DS N°7 is a new compact crossover from the French brand DS Automobiles, serving as the replacement for its predecessor, the DS 7. It enters the market with both pure-electric and hybrid powertrain options. In terms of size, it is positioned between its primary German competitors, the BMW iX1 and iX3, aiming to capture a share of the premium compact segment.

What are its key battery and range specifications?

The standout feature of the electric DS N°7 is its large battery capacity relative to its size. The top-tier model is equipped with a 97.2-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery, which is a measure of its energy storage. This large battery provides the front-wheel-drive version with a range of 460 miles (740 km) on a single charge, according to the WLTP standard, a global testing procedure for vehicle range. A dual-motor, all-wheel-drive variant with the same battery achieves 422 miles (679 km). A smaller 73.7 kWh battery option is also available, offering a range of 337 miles (543 km).

How does it perform?

The DS N°7 offers several performance levels. The single-motor, front-wheel-drive model produces 242 horsepower. The most powerful version is the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive model, which delivers a combined 345 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in a claimed 5.4 seconds. A hybrid model is also offered, pairing a 1.2-liter engine with an electric motor for 143 horsepower, though the long range of the electric versions makes them the primary focus.

How fast does the electric version charge?

The vehicle supports DC fast charging at speeds up to 160 kW. In practical terms, this allows the battery to gain approximately 118 miles (190 km) of range in 10 minutes. A charging session from 20% to 80% state of charge takes about 27 minutes for the large battery. For home charging, an 11 kW onboard AC charger is standard, with a 22 kW version available as an option. The vehicle does not use an 800-volt architecture, but its charging speeds are competitive in its class.

What about its design and features?

The DS N°7 features a distinct design based on the brand's Aero Sport Lounge concept, with a focus on a luxurious appearance inside and out. The interior can be configured in five different styles. Notable technical features include Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, which allows the car's battery to power external electronic devices. The infotainment system is new and integrates ChatGPT. An unusual comfort feature is the availability of vents in the front seats designed to warm the occupant's neck.

How is it positioned in the market?

With a starting price of €64,200, the DS N°7 is positioned as a premium vehicle. It aims to compete with established luxury crossovers by offering a unique design, a comprehensive set of features, and a class-leading range in its long-range configuration. Its market success will depend on its ability to attract buyers away from its German rivals.
