Audi has confirmed the return of the A2 nameplate for a new all-electric model. Positioned as an entry-level vehicle, the A2 e-tron is set to replace both the A1 and Q2 models, targeting a broader customer base for the brand's electric lineup. A full reveal is anticipated for the Munich Motor Show this fall.
The new A2 e-tron will be built on the Volkswagen Group's MEB platform. This is the same modular electric drive matrix used for vehicles like the Volkswagen ID.3. Using this shared architecture helps control production costs. The platform utilizes a 400-volt electrical system, which provides capable charging speeds, though not as rapid as the 800-volt systems found in more premium EVs. Multiple power outputs are expected to be available.
Official teaser images show a silhouette that pays homage to the original A2 from 1999. The design features a high, sloping roofline intended to improve aerodynamic efficiency and interior space. Unlike the original's advanced and costly all-aluminum body, the new A2 e-tron will use a conventional steel construction to achieve a more accessible price point. Spy photos suggest a wider stance than its predecessor, giving it a more modern and planted appearance on the road.
Inside, the A2 e-tron is expected to follow Audi's latest design language, seen in models like the Q6. This includes a driver-focused cockpit dominated by large digital screens and a reduction in physical buttons. Despite its position as the smallest electric Audi, the interior is anticipated to maintain a premium feel with quality materials and features like extensive ambient lighting, aiming to deliver practicality without compromising on the brand's standards.
The A2 e-tron represents a key part of Audi's strategy to consolidate its entry-level offerings into a single electric model. By replacing the combustion-engine A1 and Q2, Audi aims to attract new buyers to its electric range. Pricing is a crucial element, with base models expected to start below €35,000. This positions the A2 e-tron to compete in the growing compact electric vehicle segment and makes ownership of an electric Audi more attainable for a wider audience.
