BMW has announced an update for its flagship 7-Series sedan, set to be revealed at the Auto China show in Beijing. This refresh, known in the industry as a Life Cycle Impulse (LCI), brings significant changes to its design and technology. Here is what the update entails.
The most noticeable changes are at the front. The car features a new lighting design with slimmer, more horizontal daytime running lights. The signature kidney grille is now larger, more squared-off, and illuminated, with a potential switch from vertical to horizontal slats. While the split-headlight design remains, the main beams are housed in slightly smaller clusters. The side profile is mostly unchanged, while the rear receives updated LED taillights and a revised bumper.
This updated 7-Series will be the first current BMW to use technology from the upcoming "Neue Klasse" family of cars. This means it gets new digital features inside. One major addition is the "BMW Panoramic Vision," a display that stretches across the entire width of the windshield's base. It will also run on a new iDrive X operating system. Behind the scenes, the car's functions will be managed by four powerful central computers, which BMW refers to as "Superbrains," to handle all software processes.
No, the car is not built on the all-new Neue Klasse platform. It continues to use the current CLAR architecture, which is the car's underlying foundation. This allows it to keep its range of powertrain options, including gasoline, plug-in hybrid, and the fully electric i7 model. These systems may receive minor refinements for better performance or efficiency. A new high-performance variant from the BMW Alpina sub-brand is also expected.
The luxury sedan market is highly competitive. The 7-Series' primary rival remains the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which recently received its own significant refresh. Additionally, the 7-Series faces increasing pressure in key markets like China from new, technologically advanced models such as the Huawei-backed Maextro S800. This update is designed to keep the BMW competitive against these established and emerging challengers.
