The upcoming 2027 Volvo EX60 is poised to be one of the most important vehicles for the brand, transitioning the popular XC60 into the electric era. Based on an early ride-along in a pre-production model, here is a straightforward analysis of what to expect from this new electric luxury SUV.

Just how powerful is the new EX60?

Volvo will offer the EX60 in several power configurations. The base model, known as the P6, will produce 369 horsepower and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. The mid-tier P10 model increases output to 503 horsepower, cutting the 0-60 mph time to a rapid 4.4 seconds. A future P12 version is planned to deliver 670 horsepower for a 3.8-second sprint. Unlike some electric vehicles that limit full power to a specific mode, the EX60 provides its maximum available horsepower in both standard and performance driving settings, ensuring consistent and strong passing capability.

What is the driving experience like?

The EX60 features a revised steering system with a ratio that is 10 percent quicker than the current XC60. In simple terms, this means tight maneuvers, such as in parking lots, require less turning of the steering wheel, giving the vehicle a more responsive feel. The vehicle also offers multiple settings for one-pedal driving. This technology allows the driver to slow the vehicle down significantly just by lifting their foot off the accelerator, with the system converting that slowing momentum back into battery charge. Drivers can choose from a light effect, a more aggressive one, or an automatic mode that adjusts based on traffic.

Is it a comfortable and practical family car?

The cabin is engineered for quietness. Even with large 22-inch wheels, road and wind noise are well-controlled, creating a serene environment. The ride quality effectively absorbs road imperfections, though it is worth noting that standard models will use a traditional spring suspension; an air suspension system will only be available on the future EX60 Cross Country model. A point of concern for practicality is the reliance on the central touchscreen for basic controls. Adjusting something as simple as fan speed requires multiple taps on the screen, which can be a distraction while driving compared to using physical knobs or buttons.

How does it compare to other electric vehicles?

The EX60's performance and technology place it firmly in the competitive luxury electric SUV segment. Its quick steering is reminiscent of the sporty feel found in Tesla models, while its well-tuned and selectable one-pedal driving modes offer the kind of customization seen in other premium EVs. While faster electric SUVs exist, the EX60's acceleration is more than sufficient for any daily driving scenario. It presents a compelling package focused on safety, comfort, and substantial power.
