Honda has updated its ZR-V compact SUV for the Japanese market. The 2026 model brings several changes, most notably a complete shift in its engine lineup. Here’s a breakdown of what’s new based on the official release.

What is the biggest change under the hood?

The most significant update is the powertrain. Honda has discontinued the 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. The 2026 ZR-V is now exclusively available with a 2.0-liter e:HEV hybrid system. This is a self-charging hybrid, which means the electric motor assists the gasoline engine to improve fuel economy, and you never need to plug it in to charge. The system produces a combined 181 horsepower and is available in both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations.

Are there any updates to the exterior design?

The updates are subtle but noticeable. The lineup receives new paint options, including Twilight Mist Black Pearl and Seabed Blue Pearl, along with newly designed 18-inch alloy wheels. The standard high-spec models retain the distinctive vertical-slat grille. However, a new trim level introduces a different look.

What is the new Cross Touring trim?

Honda has added the "Cross Touring" trim to the ZR-V range. This version is designed to have a more rugged, off-road-inspired appearance. It features a honeycomb-style grille, similar to the one on the American-market HR-V, along with aluminum-look skid plates and extra protective body cladding. This model also gets unique matte black 18-inch wheels and can be ordered in an exclusive Desert Beige Pearl color.

How does this update affect the ZR-V's market position?

By making the ZR-V a hybrid-only vehicle, Honda is directly competing with other fuel-efficient compact SUVs and following the global trend toward electrification. This move positions the vehicle for buyers who prioritize lower running costs and reduced emissions over pure combustion power. While official pricing is pending, a slight price increase is expected, suggesting Honda is marketing the ZR-V as a modern, well-equipped, and eco-conscious choice within its crowded market segment.
