Recent signals from Stellantis executives suggest a V8 engine could once again be offered in the Jeep Grand Cherokee. This development follows strong customer feedback and the successful reintroduction of the Hemi in other models. Here is a breakdown of the situation.

What evidence points to a V8 comeback?

Jeep officials have openly acknowledged customer demand for a V8 option. Joe Aljajawi, the Grand Cherokee's engineering lead, recently told reporters to “stay tuned” regarding the engine's possible return, stating that the company is listening to its customers. This follows earlier comments from Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf, who confirmed the company's commitment to V8 engines and hinted at new V8 models on the horizon.

Why bring back a V8 with modern engines available?

The current Grand Cherokee lineup includes a 3.6-liter V6 with 293 horsepower and a newer 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 324 horsepower. While the turbo engine's output is close to the previous 5.7-liter V8's 360 horsepower, the V8 offers a distinct character, sound, and power delivery that many buyers prefer. The market's appetite for V8s was proven when Ram reintroduced the 5.7-liter Hemi in its 1500 pickup, receiving over 10,000 orders in less than 24 hours.

Which Hemi engine might Jeep use?

Two main possibilities exist. The most direct path would be to offer the 5.7-liter Hemi V8, similar to the one now in the Ram 1500. In that truck, the engine is rated at 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque, which would provide a significant performance increase for the Grand Cherokee. This option would satisfy traditional buyers looking for V8 power and towing capability.

Could a high-performance Trackhawk model return?

The revival of Stellantis's SRT performance division opens the door for a far more powerful option: a new Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. Speculation points to this model using the supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine found in the Ram 1500 TRX. This powertrain produces an immense 777 horsepower and 680 lb-ft of torque, which would position the Grand Cherokee at the top of the high-performance SUV segment. SRT CEO Tim Kuniskis has hinted at additional high-performance models, lending credibility to this possibility.
