Polestar is expanding its electric vehicle lineup with a new model aimed squarely at the core of the U.S. market: a more conventional Polestar 4 SUV. This vehicle is critical to the brand's growth strategy. Here are the essential facts presented in a question-and-answer format.
This model is a more traditional sport utility vehicle, departing from the current Polestar 4's fastback coupe styling. It replaces the controversial windowless rear design with a conventional rear window and profile, a move intended to broaden its appeal. It is a midsize SUV with an expected length of over 191 inches, focusing on increased practicality and interior space compared to its coupe-styled sibling.
Two powertrain versions will be offered. The Long Range Single Motor model features a rear-mounted motor producing 272 horsepower and 253 lb-ft of torque, with an estimated 0-60 mph time of 6.9 seconds. Its EPA-rated range is projected to be around 310 miles. The Long Range Dual Motor version adds a front motor for all-wheel drive, delivering a combined system output of 544 horsepower and 506 lb-ft of torque. This high-performance configuration accelerates from 0-60 mph in approximately 3.7 seconds and has an estimated range of 280 miles.
Both variants are equipped with a 100-kWh battery pack operating on a 400-volt electrical architecture. When connected to a 200-kW DC fast charger, the battery can be replenished from a 10 to 80 percent state of charge in about 30 minutes. This charging speed is competitive and reduces downtime on long-distance journeys.
The Polestar 4 for the U.S. market is built at a plant in Busan, South Korea. This is a key strategic decision. By producing the vehicle outside of China, Polestar effectively sidesteps the substantial U.S. tariffs imposed on Chinese-made electric vehicles. This allows the brand to offer the Polestar 4 at a more competitive price point in the American market.
While official pricing has not been released, the new SUV is positioned to be a high-volume seller. For context, the current Polestar 4 coupe model is priced from $46,400 after factory discounts. Company leadership expects the Polestar 4 SUV to quickly become the brand's bestselling model in the U.S., challenging established players in the profitable electric SUV segment and driving the brand's sales growth.
