BMW has officially teased an upcoming long-wheelbase version of its iX3 electric SUV, specifically developed for the Chinese market. This extended variant boasts a significantly longer wheelbase, enhanced rear-seat comfort, and a suite of China-specific technologies, including locally developed software and AI-powered assistants. While primarily aimed at China, select global markets may also see its release.
BMW is expanding its electric SUV offering with a new long-wheelbase iX3, designed with the Chinese consumer in mind. This extended model will feature a wheelbase stretched by 4.3 inches (108 mm), resulting in a total wheelbase of 118.3 inches (3,005 mm). This increase is intended to provide "significantly enhanced rear-seat comfort and overall spaciousness," positioning it to compete with rivals like the Mercedes GLC L.
Beyond the physical expansion, BMW has integrated a host of China-specific technological features. The iX3 Long Wheelbase will utilize a "Chinese derivative" of Operating System X, with roughly 70% of its software engineered locally. This includes a navigation system developed in partnership with Amap and an Intelligent Personal Assistant powered by large language models from Alibaba and DeepSeek. Furthermore, BMW is collaborating with Momenta to develop China-specific driver assistance systems, optimized for local traffic conditions and complex urban environments.
While specific powertrain details remain under wraps, BMW has confirmed the iX3 Long Wheelbase will feature an 800-volt electrical architecture, cylindrical battery cells, and sixth-generation eDrive technology. The automaker promises a DC fast charging capability of 400 kW, enabling drivers to gain over 249 miles (400 km) of range in just 10 minutes. The CLTC combined range is expected to exceed 559 miles (900 km). A full charge from 10% to 80% is estimated to take 21 minutes. The European iX3, for reference, offers a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 463 hp and a range of up to 310 miles (500 km) on the WLTP cycle.
Although the iX3 Long Wheelbase is primarily developed for China, BMW has indicated that it will also be offered in select international markets, including India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia. The vehicle is set to make its official debut at the Beijing Auto Show in April, with sales commencing in the latter half of the year.
