Ford Performance has introduced its latest all-electric drag racing machine, the Mustang Cobra Jet 2200. This vehicle represents a significant step forward in the company's electric motorsport development, setting a new world record for an electric vehicle in the quarter-mile with a time of 6.81 seconds at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals in Charlotte.

Powertrain and Performance

The Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 is powered by two electric motors that produce a combined output of 2,200 horsepower. This model is the third iteration in Ford's electric Cobra Jet series, following the 1400 model from 2021 and the 1800 model from 2023. The powertrain has been substantially updated, with the new motors weighing approximately half as much as those in the previous version.

To manage the immense power delivery, the vehicle is equipped with a centrifugal clutch. This component allows for controlled torque application at launch, a feature more common in traditional drag racers. The system also includes a two-speed transmission, which helps optimize power delivery across the entire quarter-mile run, from the initial launch to reaching top speeds of over 220 mph.

Engineering and Design

A key focus in the development of the Cobra Jet 2200 was weight reduction. Engineers successfully shed about 1,100 pounds (499 kg) compared to its predecessor, bringing the total vehicle weight to approximately 3,325 pounds (1,500 kg). This significant weight loss contributes directly to the vehicle's improved acceleration and record-setting performance.

The battery system is strategically distributed throughout the chassis to optimize weight balance. It includes a main battery on the undertray, two packs at the rear, and a movable battery at the front. This configuration allows the race team to adjust the car's weight distribution to suit specific track conditions, ensuring maximum traction and stability.

Market Context and Evolution

The Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 serves as a technology demonstrator, showcasing the performance capabilities of electric vehicle technology in the demanding environment of drag racing. While its 2,200 horsepower figure surpasses that of electric road hypercars like the Rimac Nevera, the Cobra Jet is a purpose-built machine not intended for public roads.

The rapid progression from the 1,400 hp model in 2021 to the 2,200 hp model today highlights the accelerated pace of development in electric performance. The vehicle's successful record-breaking runs confirm Ford's position at the forefront of applying EV technology to competitive motorsports.
