Denza, a brand under the BYD umbrella, has officially unveiled the production version of its Z model, including a new convertible variant. Presented at the Beijing Auto Show, the high-performance electric vehicle is part of a series that will also include coupe and track-focused editions, signaling a direct challenge to established European luxury sports cars.

Design and Specifications

The Denza Z series is styled under the direction of Wolfgang Egger, previously the head of design for Audi. The convertible model features a four-seater cabin and a fabric soft-top roof. Its body panels are largely shared with the coupe, but a redesigned rear deck gives the open-top version distinct proportions. The vehicle displayed at the auto show featured a satin-finish bluish-green exterior paint and a tri-color interior.

Powertrain and Technology

The vehicle's performance is derived from a three-motor electric powertrain that provides all-wheel drive capabilities. The combined output is stated to be approximately 1,000 horsepower (746 kW). This powertrain is supported by advanced chassis and battery technology from BYD.

The Denza Z is equipped with the DiSus-M electromagnetic suspension system, which actively manages the vehicle's suspension for improved ride comfort and handling. It also incorporates the latest “Eye of the God” advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) for enhanced safety. The battery pack is compatible with flash charging technology, allowing for significantly reduced charging times.

Market Strategy and Positioning

In an unusual move, Denza plans to launch the Z series in Europe and other global markets before it becomes available in China. Following its premiere in Beijing, the model is scheduled to make its dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the United Kingdom. This export-first strategy underscores the brand's global aspirations.

The Denza Z is positioned to compete with models like the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore but at a substantially lower price point. Estimates from Chinese media place the domestic price between ¥400,000 and ¥500,000 (approximately $58,600 to $73,200). This pricing strategy could make it a disruptive force in the high-performance electric vehicle segment.
