Audi is making significant shifts in its lineup, discontinuing its two most affordable models, the A1 hatchback and the Q2 crossover. This strategic move is aimed at streamlining production and focusing resources on future electric vehicles, including a highly anticipated sports car set to enter production in 2027. The brand is also preparing to launch the A2 e-tron, an all-electric compact model.

Key Takeaways

End of an Era for Affordable Audis

Audi has announced the cessation of production for its entry-level A1 hatchback and Q2 compact crossover. The Q2's production run will conclude in Ingolstadt this April, making way for the forthcoming A2 e-tron. While the Q2 was never officially sold in the United States, it found considerable success in other markets, with over 887,000 units sold globally since its 2016 debut. Despite its initial popularity, sales have reportedly declined in recent years.

Similarly, production of the A1 is being phased out in Martorell, Spain. Launched in 2010, the A1 has seen over 1.3 million sales across two generations. Available in Sportback and Allstreet variants, the A1, like the Q2, experienced strong initial demand but has seen its sales taper off more recently.

The Rise of Electric Mobility

The discontinuation of these models is directly linked to Audi's strategic pivot towards electrification. The A1 and Q2 will be succeeded by the A2 e-tron, an all-electric compact car expected to debut this fall. This new EV will likely utilize the MEB+ platform, shared with models like the ID.3 Neo, and is anticipated to offer battery options of 58 kWh and 79 kWh, with a potential WLTP range of up to 391 miles (630 km).

A New Electric Sports Car on the Horizon

In addition to the A2 e-tron, Audi has officially confirmed that an all-electric sports car will enter production in 2027. This new model, previewed by the Concept C, will be manufactured at Audi's Böllinger Höfe facility, known for its small-series production capabilities. The electric sports car is envisioned as Audi's answer to competitors like the Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman, featuring a two-seat configuration, a retractable hardtop, and a minimalist interior, all wrapped in a fresh design language.
