Asus has provided a first look at its upcoming Wi-Fi 8 router at CES 2026, signaling a significant leap in wireless technology. While the full commercial release is anticipated for 2026, the company's ROG NeoCore concept router showcases the potential of this new standard, which prioritizes reliability and seamless performance over raw speed increases.
The ROG NeoCore router, presented as a concept, features a striking design with eight antennas and three LAN ports, hinting at robust connectivity options. This early reveal at CES 2026 underscores Asus's commitment to pushing the boundaries of networking technology. The company's move towards Wi-Fi 8 comes even as many consumers are still adopting Wi-Fi 7, highlighting the rapid pace of innovation in wireless standards.
Asus is not alone in embracing the Wi-Fi 8 standard. Major industry players like Broadcom and MediaTek are also heavily invested in its development. Broadcom has announced new chipsets, including the BCM4918 APU and dual-band radios like the BCM6714 and BCM6719, designed to power Wi-Fi 8 access points and support AI-driven home experiences. MediaTek's Filogic 8000 family is also pioneering the Wi-Fi 8 ecosystem, with mass production targeted for late 2026.
Unlike previous iterations that primarily focused on speed, Wi-Fi 8 appears to be emphasizing enhanced reliability, lower latency, and seamless roaming capabilities. This shift is particularly relevant for the growing demands of AI-powered devices and applications within the home. The new standard aims to provide a more stable and consistent connection, crucial for real-time interactions and smart home ecosystems. While the official Wi-Fi 8 standard is not expected to be finalized until 2028, the early demonstrations and product concepts suggest a strong industry push towards its adoption in the coming years.
