Apple's popular set-top box, the Apple TV 4K, is reportedly poised for a significant transformation by 2026. While the current model remains a top-tier streaming device, upcoming upgrades are expected to enhance its processing power, introduce advanced AI capabilities, and improve connectivity, potentially positioning it as a central hub for smart home integration.
Rumors suggest the next Apple TV 4K will feature the A17 Pro chip, the same processor found in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPad mini 7. This upgrade promises a substantial performance boost with faster CPU and GPU speeds, and a significantly improved Neural Engine. Even without a redesign, these internal enhancements could make the Apple TV faster, smarter, and better equipped to handle advanced audio and visual capabilities, while also serving as a robust smart home hub.
With the potential inclusion of the A17 Pro chip, Apple TV's RAM could be boosted to 8GB. This increase is crucial for supporting Apple Intelligence, Apple's AI platform. While advanced features like Writing Tools or Image Generation might not appear on the Apple TV, the enhanced RAM would improve multitasking, gaming performance, and overall navigation. This upgrade aligns with the expected launch of an all-new Siri around iOS 26.4 next year.
Another significant potential upgrade is the integration of Apple's proprietary N1 chip, responsible for connectivity functions like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. This chip, introduced with the iPhone 17, supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. If adopted by the Apple TV, it would represent a considerable improvement over the current Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 standards. Additionally, a Siri Remote with a Precision Find chip is a long-awaited feature that could be introduced.
The changes aren't limited to the hardware. The Apple TV streaming service itself may see enhancements, especially with Apple's growing focus on sports. Given its role as the official streaming partner for the new Formula 1 season in the U.S. and its existing deals for MLB and MLS, Apple might introduce a new sports tier or advanced sports functionalities within the app. Features like multi-cam support could become exclusive to the new Apple TV to attract more subscribers.
While the current Apple TV 4K is an excellent device, those considering a purchase in the near future might benefit from waiting for the next generation, expected in early 2026. This new model could usher in a new era of smart home integration for Apple, offering more features at a potentially more affordable price. The release might coincide with other new smart home products, such as a third-generation HomePod or Apple's rumored smart home devices.
