Personal computers are about to change in a big way. People want machines that run longer on one charge and stay online all the time - the industry is shifting to meet that demand. Below are the trends to watch.
High-performance Windows computers that use ARM chips will soon reach store shelves. Microsoft is not testing - it is building special editions of Windows 11 including the 26H1 update, for those chips.
The change ends the long rule of x86 design. Qualcomm will ship the Snapdragon X2 Elite - Nvidia reportedly prepares N1X silicon. Both chipsets aim for high speed at low power. The result is laptops that last multiple days on battery and run fast.
The era of one generic operating system is fading. The new model pairs hardware plus software during design. Microsoft states that Windows 11 26H1 targets “specific silicon,” meaning the code fits exact processor features instead of all processors right away.
Apple proved the method works. Microsoft now writes a fresh OS core, code named “Bromine,” for the coming ARM machines. Because each component is matched in advance, the devices use less energy and respond faster.
Microsoft will release “26H1” in the first half of the year breaking its usual once-a-year rhythm. The company plans major updates when new ARM PCs from Qualcomm besides Nvidia arrive, not on a fixed date. Devices launch with software already tuned for them.
