Well-sourced reports say Apple will release a low cost MacBook in the first half of next year. The price sits well under $1,000. Apple has long sold only premium notebooks - this plan marks a clear shift. The new model aims to take sales from Chromebooks and inexpensive Windows laptops in schools and among casual users.

The machine is expected to run a chip first built for the iPhone. Internal tests show the phone chip beats the M1 processor Apple released a few years ago, while keeping costs low. To hit the target price, Apple will fit a basic LCD panel plus a screen that measures a little less than the current 13.6-inch standard.

Engineers refer to the project as J700. A MacBook that costs far less than the $999 MacBook Air would open the macOS market to students, budget minded companies and shoppers who almost bought an iPad but wanted a keyboard. If the reports prove accurate, the low cost Mac will bring Apple's mobile class speed but also its familiar software to the entry level laptop space at an aggressive price.
