While Apple's laptop lineup, from the MacBook Air to the high-end MacBook Pro, remains readily accessible for consumers, the company's desktop offerings are facing significant availability challenges. Prospective buyers of the M4 Mac mini and Mac Studio are encountering extended shipping delays and, in some cases, are unable to place orders at all for specific configurations.

Analyzing the Shortage

Over the past several months, the availability of Apple's compact desktop computers has steadily declined. The issue has recently escalated, with the baseline $599 M4 Mac mini, which includes 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, now listed as "currently unavailable" on Apple's official website. This status is unusual for Apple, even when a product line is nearing a hardware refresh.

The supply problem extends beyond the entry-level model. All M4 Mac mini configurations with 256GB of storage or 32GB of RAM are unavailable for purchase. Similarly, M4 Pro Mac mini models equipped with 64GB of RAM cannot be ordered. The more powerful Mac Studio is also affected, with configurations featuring 128GB or 256GB of RAM listed as unavailable.

For those models that can still be ordered, patience is required. Most remaining M4 Mac mini and Mac Studio configurations are showing shipping estimates ranging from five to twelve weeks. This contrasts sharply with the availability of other M4-powered devices. For instance, most M4 iMac models, including those with 32GB of RAM, are available for delivery within one to two weeks. Likewise, new MacBook Pros with high-capacity RAM and storage can be acquired within two to three weeks.

This discrepancy indicates the problem is not a simple shortage of the M4 chip itself, nor is it a general scarcity of RAM and SSD components. The constraints appear to be specific to the Mac mini and Mac Studio product lines, pointing towards a more complex issue within their dedicated supply chains or manufacturing processes. As a result, customers in the market for a new Apple desktop computer face an uncertain waiting period.
