Google has rolled out a significant update for its Gemini AI, introducing the ability to import chat histories and personalized memory from other major AI platforms. This move marks a pivotal step towards greater interoperability in the rapidly evolving AI landscape, allowing users to maintain conversational context and preferences when switching between services.
The new functionality is divided into two distinct import options, both aimed at breaking down the data silos that currently exist between competing AI assistants.
Users can now directly transfer their conversation histories from other AI applications, with Google specifically naming competitors like ChatGPT and Claude. The process involves exporting your data from the original platform, which typically provides a .zip file, and then uploading that file directly into Gemini. These imported conversations are integrated into the Gemini interface, marked with a special icon for easy identification, and remain searchable and deletable. This feature addresses a major pain point for users, eliminating the need to start from scratch and lose valuable historical context when adopting a new AI tool. It empowers users with greater control over their own data, preventing platform lock-in.
Beyond raw chat logs, Gemini can also import a summarized "memory" of a user's preferences and instructions. This is achieved by running a specialized prompt in an AI like ChatGPT or Claude, which generates a structured summary of key user details, including demographics, interests, and explicit instructions (e.g., "always do X"). This text block is then pasted into Gemini to pre-personalize the assistant. This method accelerates the onboarding process, enabling Gemini to understand a user's needs and preferences without a lengthy learning period. It points to a future where a user's core AI identity can be ported across different services, ensuring a consistent and personalized experience everywhere. It is important to note that this import functionality is currently unavailable in the EEA, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom.
